Okay, so it's three to one in favor of "go ahead and tongue the reed to stop". I am SO relieved, because that's basically what I've been doing for a year now, since I played recorder for years, and that's how you stop the tone on a recorder, so it was kinda instinctive. But then I ran across this remark by Rothwell and I was like, "uh-oh".
So the consensus is that it's okay to gently ease into a pussyfoot little "thoot" depending on what else is going on in the phrase as long as you don't "-THUD-" like a door slamming.
