Take it from one who just expierenced the greatest failure thought possible to me, listen to your teacher and don't try to do things on your own. I taught myself the oboe because there was no one to teach me and I have been playing it wrong for seven years. Because of this I did not pass my college audition. I'm now taking lessons to correct my mistakes and have another chance but I still regret not learning how to play the oboe correctly from the beginning.
