I recently got a cheap $20 Forrests wedge knife to do the dirty work on my reeds. It was very sharp when I got it, catches on my fingernail easily.
I wasn't thinking and sharpened it on a fine India using the same method I use for my DHG knives. Now it's not very sharp and likes to rip the cane off from my reeds.
Any advice? None of my books cover sharpening wedge knives and couldn't find any information online.
Also, what exactly is knife "chatter?"

Try to get a burr on your knife... A burr is a microscopic fold of metal on the edge of the knife like this image here:

It is necessary for any kind of scraping action with a knife.
Knife chatter is the sound that a knife makes when it scrapes over a rough patch of cane and "bounces". Chattering tends to happen if a knife has a bad edge, or it has a very thin blade.
For more info on sharpening, you can check these videos out:

P.S. You should try a Japanese ceramic water stone- I find them to be a lot more effective at taking off steel than India stones.

Thanks! I remember watching the video from Pierre Roy a few years ago. I bought the $2.99 knife sharpener he recommended for about $10 online. The reviews look good and it seems promising.
If anyone is interested, they're still available at Harbor Freight for $3.99 each + $6 S&H. http://www.harborfreight.com/handheld-knife-sharpener-62452.html

While the sharpener you are talking about would create a sharp edge, I would imagine that it would not create a burr... You should use a stone as well to create a burr.
As you may have seen, Mr. Roy used a stone after using that sharpener.
If you're interested, I think Pierre Roy's channel has another video on creating a burr.

Thanks! I did see that he was using some kind of Japanese water stone in his video. He sells them on his website too for $25, which seems kinda inexpensive.
