Wow, scary, Howard! (Just don't go taking any Nigerian air flights any time soon.)
I have personally had one harrowing moment on an airliner -- years ago -- when instruments indicated failure of the hydraulic system and we were put through the "grab your ankles and kiss your a** goodbye" procedure prior to an emergency landing at Dallas, attended by fire engines and foam trucks and TV news crews. Babies were wrapped in men's jackets, and buckled into vacant seats. Shoes and jewelry were removed.
It all turned out to be a malfunction of the instruments, not the hydraulics, but we were shaken and disoriented, nonetheless. Got back on the same plane an hour later and proceeded to our destination without incident. Now flying seems a lot like taking the bus.
You are about the tenth person who has recommended Han de Vries as an oboist to listen to -- I think I need to try him. Holliger on Elliot Carter? But what would he embellish?
I envy your sessions with your teacher and the ensemble. One of the problems with living in an isolated area (East Central Ohio, USA, boondocks) is the virtually complete lack of contact with like-minded others.
How I would love to sit down for an evening with other capable and inquisitive players and explore unknown repertoire!
