 Re: Moral reed dilemma

My main teacher, who studied seriously with Henri Debuescher, mostly had played with the "W scrape" that he was taught by that great player. However, he had a lot of USA students and he felt that he should be able to teach them the prevailing long scrape for the USA. Thus, he switched to the long scrape to help his students produce the sounds associated with that scrape, especially since he was providing reeds to some students.

Since I was using the long scrape before starting with him, he taught me little about reeds, working more on other aspects of oboe playing.

Later in life, he switched back to the "W scrape" as he felt it was easier to make than the long scrape reed.

It seems to me that the advice of some expert local teachers would be very valuable to you, more so than that of non-local persons, such as me. But if you intend to be a serious oboe teacher, the needs of the students would be important. Good luck!
