 Re: cold weather playing

I refuse to play my oboe in very cold conditions. Keeping it toasty before taking it out in cold weather is still damaging because of the differential in temperature. It's the difference that's gonna cause the most stress, not the absolute temperature. If you heat it up and then expose it right away to cold temps, then blow through it, who knows what's going to happen. If you have to play outside, I wouldn't heat it up, but whenever you are not playing, I'd stick it in an oboe cozy. With your hands, keep it at room temp, no hotter.

When I was asked to play inside an ice rink, I borrowed a plastic student oboe. I wasn't even going to risk my oboe which just had a plastic top joint.
