 cold weather playing

How you you warm your instrument if you are going to be playing outside in cold weather? I'm actually thinking of a heating pad that I can plug in through an adaptor to my cigarette lighter (in the car,) to have it warm before I take it out. I've seen the suggestion to put the joints under your armpits for five minutes....but my arms are not that big and I think a heating pad, on the right temperature, could be used to keep the entire case with the oboe in it, warm.
