 The oboes arrived!

After much "Night before Christmas-like" anticipation, I received the oboes today. They are all very nice instruments. It's going to be a tough decision. I am playing some of the Barret Progressive melodies and comparing the sounds on all three by playing the same piece. I was playing the No. 3 melody, and I got to the 14th measure on the Delphine- wow I really miss the D trill key in the middle joint there. That may be a deal breaker for this particular oboe.

Right now, it is between the Yamaha and the Fox. (Both have the D trill key where I remember it.) I haven't completely given up on the Delphine though because I think that it has a nice sound and maybe the pitch is more exact than the Yamaha. The Yamaha has some interesting and complex characteristics in its sound though. By the way, I didn't notice the difference with my hands in the key placement on the Delphine. My hands are average for a woman, and the keys didn't seem too close together. I really like the Fox because it seems to be more centered on pitch than either the Yamaha or the Rigoutat Delphine ---or at least it's easier for me to find the correct pitch with my out of shape embouchure. The Fox also has a beautiful sound, and I agree with Rachael that it has a bit more of that classic oboe sound (this is a very slight difference though). As my muscle memory came back regarding embouchure and posture/diaphragm, all three oboes started to sound remarkably better! -) In fact I had forgotten how 90% of playing well is really your reed and "you". Actually, I wish that one seemed a lot worse than the others to me. Maybe over the weekend things will change. Since they are all so close it might come down to the one least likely to crack, which would be the Fox. It will take me at least this weekend to decide.

If anyone can think of anything else to play or test the differences please let me know.

Regards,

Kate
