Yes, I take the shiny stuff off, but not a whole lot. The thickness/width of the spine adds a lot of cover, so I get the channels scraped down, and get everything sort of defined. If the reed feels stuffy afterwards, then I begin narrowing, and then defining the spine. The pitch drops any time you touch the spine, so I make sure to scrape the tip long to trim as I scrape the spine down so I can clip it up.
