I think one of the hardest things in life to be is objective. This is especially true when you make a large objective of time and/or money into a particular situation. Right now I am fighting myself on this particular situation. I really want the Chudnow E or S staples to work for whatever oboe I purchase in the future (by the end of May I should have my own). I do not know why I feel this way, maybe I like the look of them, or that they have the o rings which I think slide easier in and out. However, I continually have to tell myself, "Yes they look cool, but make sure that sound and feel are the main objective here".
As far as switching between staples, I think they are part of your voice, and it is important to find your own. However, if you keep changing your voice, you will never reach your full potential. If you don't mind a bit of advice, I would listen to your teacher, especially if you respect him/her as a musician. He/she has much experience to provide you, and if it is enough of a hinderance for your teacher to tell you multiple times not to switch, maybe it's best to take heed. It sounds like you are doing it right, however. As you say, you predominantly make reeds on the Glotin staples, of which you are most comfortable. I think that is a good idea, and making a few odd reeds here and there on other staples should not interfere with progress. Maybe leave them at home though, just to let your teacher feel like he/she can trust that his/her words are not falling on deft ears. I assure you it will be reciprocated.
