Rachel,

The Evelyn rothwell book describes a modified American scrape. There is a very short section that describes the "classic French scrape", but only descriptive - not a method for making or adjusting. For a good treatment of short-scrape reeds I would recommend the DVD by Linda Walsh.

To answer the question you asked - yes, the techniques you are learning now for American-scrape reeds will be directly applicable to your short-scrape reedmaking when you return. That said, it is probably a good idea to immerse yourself fully in the mysteries of long-scrape reeds during this year - get really, really good at making excellent long scrape reeds. Decide to switch back when your year is over and you return to Non-America.

Perhaps the switch will not be necessary when you get back home!
