I do apply oil a couple times per season, and lightly. I also rub down as much of the exterior as I can w/o removing keys.
I've used sweet almond oil for bores for a long while and now use Larry Naylor's bore oil the past 5 years.
I like the thread a lot and all the things it suggests for further study.
I'd like to suggest something,... a crack registry. Where someone with your blog skills and data knowledge could archive a few points about cracks or perhaps a persistent thread out here would work.
Make of oboe, year made, oiled or not, geographical location of oboist, broken in or new... or re-breakin under way, etc. Location of crack, description (length, etc.).
When and where repaired and by whom.
