I want to think about binding-keys some more. In my limited experience, keys bind generally in the winter, and the main culprits are those mounted on horizontal pivots. The problem is obviously that the distance between the posts must change.
Is this due to humidity, or to temperature?
Also - the heat/humidity coefficient of expansion must be different along the grain and perpendicular to the grain, otherwise the far longer vertical pivots would be much more susceptible to binding. True?
If it were due to temperature it would be a relatively easy matter to just warm the instrument in ones hands and the problem would go away. Does it?
Let's assume the problem is humidity. A "damp-it" in the case may not help much, unless the case is also kept warm and sealed. All of the surrounding air will be exceedingly dry due to the low temperatures outside (moisture will have condensed out of the air).
All in all, there is a lot we still don't understand about the materials we use. About time someone did a serious study here.
