Ah, the 'cult' of the Reed Scrape.

I was blessed to have a teacher who had not only studied with Mr Tabuteau, but summed up his reed philosophy thus: Cut It So It Plays.

He 'got' (and taught) that reeds differ with cane density, gouge, staple type, etc etc and left it up to the reed-maker (his little student, me) to decide what worked best, setting a wonderful example in the process. He showed me how to adjust a reed and taught WHY the different areas of the reed affect the pitch, tone, etc.

So, from that, I've learned through the years that a scrape can be a VERY individualized thing. I've experimented with short scrapes and long scrapes, and not only found 'my' scrape, but have been able to adapt to others.

It is SO GOOD to share our experiences on this board. AS for this thread, I've always enjoyed making tips; it's the 'blend' (between tip and back) that I have more trouble with. Always learning...
