By the way, there is a fundamental difference between emery and sand. They look alike except one on cloth and the other on paper. Emery contains iron particles while sand only contain silicon oxide, i.e. glass.
Iron particles may contaminate wood. At least it will leave some red stain, which is iron oxide, that could seep into the reed grain. Not sure what effects it may have to reed. I have never ran into such incident yet.
