Hello Saranya, hello and welcome.

You have had some excellent advice from some very experienced people to which I cannot add anything new or more informed..

I would like to second what goodwinds said about good for you allowing your son this chance..The Oboe is a beautiful instrument and I urge you to support his learning and accept that like all instruments the Oboe has it challenges but no more than any other instrument if it is taught and handled correctly by the teacher. Do seek out a teacher who specialises in Oboe, the embouchure (lip) is very important and a general peri teacher may not be aware of what is required..If you speak with the local music shops or the IDRS (international double reed society) or the BDRS ( British Double reed society) or if you are in England try speaking with Howarths in London they know everybody..somone will help yhou find a teacher..you could if you are in England vists ABRSM forum there are lots of parents there who will have knowledge of teachers and such like..

Don't fall into the trap of people saying the Oboe is harder than other instruments..it isnt, thats a myth IMO..all instruments are a challenge , the Oboe has a few more challenges at the outset but they soon pass whereas flute and clarinets get much harder at grade 6 (which is when a lot of youngsters give up)..the Oboe deals with its tricky stuff early on so the learning process is steep at first but levels out more quickly. Its a wonderful instrument which is less populated in schools so he will be very popular for orchestras etc and will I hope lead to a lifetime of enjoyement..

Andrew
