If you can post some photos of it then that will determine whether it's a pro or student model Buffet oboe you've got. If it has a Buffet logo on all the joints and says 'Made in France' on the bell under the logo, then it's a pro model.

If it doesn't say 'Made in France' and only the bell is stamped with the Buffet logo, then it's a student model (and usually comes in a black plastic case).

The student model Buffet oboes were made by Schreiber for Buffet and have a plastic lined bore in both upper and lower joints, so the bore won't need oiling and they can be played for long periods from new.

Wooden oboes with unlined bores will have to be played in over several weeks so the wood acclimatises to the increase in humidity, but only played for a short period to begin with, then drying and putting away and then increasing the playing time by five minutes a day (starting with 30 mins. maximum).

But if it's either a pro or a student model, a full service or overhaul (depending on what condition it's in) will bring it back up to top playing condition provided the joints haven't split right through to the bore or there's no other significant damage that can't be fixed economically.

If it's a pro model, then it will last your son for years and will take him well past ABRSM Grade 8 provided it's looked after well and regularly serviced.
