In my opinion -

to have good tone - means you must already have an internalized idea of what the tone should be - it is that tonal idea that leads you to a better and more individualistic tone.

This is precisely why great Oboists have there own tone color and why people choose to play various makes of Oboes.

Of course there is a "generic" tone that everybody finds acceptable ..... and even that must be internalized to be used as a comparison.
