 Re: Breathing and Long Tones

What I call endurance is related to facial muscles. I started this thread to focus on breathing issues and in the hopes of getting people's ways of practicing long tones... I don't know much on that last one: I especially don't know what to listen for (beyond the obvious) and I certainly don't know what to observe in the body. I only know that I have a muscular quiver in my lip that I can hide using vibrato.... but vibrato is too easily overdone!

In terms of abdominal support, I need to talk to my physiotherapist: she claims to have won argument over argument against oboists, flutists, brass players and what have you about our breathing preconceptions. She also pushes for abdominal support. I prefer to talk about the gut than the diaphragm, because the purpose of the diaphragm is to open the rib cage and the gut is more easily controlled. In those areas, I have no trouble at all. As for maintaining a rich tone, I'll let my upcoming recordings speak...

But long tones... certainly not when the reed is freshly soaked... and other than crescendo/dimuendo, what can be beneficial, why and how?
