Gerry and Craig: serious thanks for that expert infos! They explain observations and both your answers together will serve to improve my recordings and lead experimentation! Maybe I can distill some simple advice for the general music student or amateur... unless you want to beat me to it! ... please do [grin]

STANDING WAVES - that's the term I was looking for! I remember them from practice rooms and recital halls where a few select notes (harmonically related) on the piano would sound like a bull-horn, though the rest of the piano was dull.

*** Gerry:
I had the opportunity to "play" with natural reverberations in a room the way you describe them. The company my wife works for http://www.telestoproductions.ca/ has a video recording studio (for green-screening spokespeople). I heard the effects of reverberation you mention between simply changing the tone colour and the note continueing after I stop playing.

They did their best in sound-proofing it, but the green-screen and lighting setup obligates some hard surfaces that bounce back something awful. It's actually good for speech.
=> Anyway, I had fun trying different positions of the microphone and myself in the room: playing towards the foam walls, towards the hard walls, mic near the foam/hard walls in front/aside/in back of me, me/mic on the carpeted area....
=> Results: in that room (compared to my house), my sound stayed pretty good, not too much buzz addition. But the layout did change the "crispness" or the gooseyness of the sound... brighter though still chocolatey
=> more experimentation required - with CD and computer accompaniment!

*** Craig:
I'll definitely study and putter around with everything you recommend. My townhouse is not really open-concept, but the stairwell is the "central" feature that connects every part of the house. So I didn't get those bull-horn notes from standing waves, but they might be happening in other parts of the house and reverberating through the structure.
=> interesting observation: I hear parties from neighbors across the field BETTER with my windows CLOSED... the sound-system music seems to travel through the bedrock and travel up the structure: open the window and the resonnating chamber is broken!

Hopefully, the cheap tripod that came with a telescope for bird watching will jack-up the microphone high up enough. I can't wait to try these because playing the 2nd movement of the Saint-Saens sonata (opening and closing) in the stairwell is really awesome!.... as long as it doesn't add buzz!
