I put some recent observations about recording the oboe and sound quality as well as the benefits on recording my practice sessions on my blog :

Some of you have much more experience with recording and I value your insight on stuff not mentioned there - I'd like to experiment more. For example, recordings made in large halls with hard walls with lots of echo seem to compliment the tone, but my dining-room (open to the living room, entrance and stairway up and downstairs) which has lots of echo seems to add buzz.
I get the impression that:
1. if echo happens too fast: adds buzz
2. (what's it called in English?) the resonating nodes between parallel walls, if the distance is shorter, will amplify higher harmonics, resulting in a more crystalline sound and more buzz.
So it seems that, contrary to my preconceptions, when recording at home, I'm best in the small room where I practice and where book cases and such dampen the tone.
