Hi,
I hired a Howarth oboe last year that had a serial number of 1256. I asked Geoffrey Bridge from AllExperts (I hadn't found this wonderful forum by then!) about its age, and he estimated it to be early 1950s, and added this:
"I had a Howarth S2 - which took three years to be delivered from ordering they were hand made. I got mine (#1226 - I think) in 1952. They made about 35 - 40 oboes a year so yours will be about 1953. Howarth's in London would tell you who it was made for and the date they collected it if your ask them. They have complete records."
You may be able to very approximately calculate from this, or wait for Chris to chime in!
