You raise some interesting points. The period oboes and reeds are reproductions of museum pieces, so presumably the dimensions are pretty accurate. However, you're right that even with extensive scholarship, what we have is the best educated guess as to not only how the instruments should sound, but how the music should be played. Furthermore, 300 years ago, there must have been pronounced differences from country to country etc. just because distances mattered so much and there were of course no recordings. Bruce Haynes and Geoffrey Burgess's priceless book The Oboe gets into this stuff in great detail. One of the intriguing things about baroque playing is the role of improvisation; when you listen to recordings of baroque playing from 50 years ago before the revival through scholarship, the music was played straight, sounding really wooden and uninspired compared to more modern better informed interpretations. In that respect, what you do with Oxymora is closer to genuine baroque playing than it is to modern oboe playing!
