There used to be a fine instrument repairer here in Israel called Ehud Leibner (I believe he no longer works at instrument repair). He found a synthetic material that was somewhat more flexible than cork, with less tendency to stick.
I think I may still have one or two of these pads on my old Marigaux, but I'd have to go and get it back from my student ..
In practice, I don't believe that these pads worked any better than cork. The pads on my Loree (cork, all the way to bottom Bb) seal perfectly. I regularly test for at least 30 seconds of seal on both joints. The perfect seal makes producing the low notes almost trivial. Honestly.
