Okay, okay, I see that this thread is interesting to sooooo many people .. but I'll soldier on.
Attempt #5 - a reed that is beautifully responsive, allows me to let notes simply fade away into nothing (ad niente) (which I need for the Mahler songs), and is in tune and has even response over the whole range of the instrument.
But it sounds shallow and even a little buzzy. Something like a high Buffet bassoon, without that undefinable inner quality, the mysterious, aching, distant soul we all strive for - the "black swan" sound.
On an oboe reed with the same problem I would thin the extreme corners, condense the blend a fraction (especially at the sides) and check the whole tip surface for bumps and nicks; but I'm not sure what to do here. I really, really don't want to affect the response! It is perfect. It has no wire - will this help?
I suspect that the tone I yearn for may be unobtainable with a tip of this width (at least 1mm wider than my "pro" reeds).
Now, I KNOW that response, ease of playing, intonation are FAR more important than tone. I also believe that the vast majority of people hearing my playing will not realize that there is something missing.
But I do. And it hurts.
