Hi all,
In my community orchestra I have been asked to play EH for a couple of Mahler songs (Ruckert-Lieder). I have borrowed a superb horn (Loree, DO series) from a colleague and was given (!) a couple of reeds by a wonderful retired pro.
But you know me - I have to make 'em myself.
I've tied on a blank from gouged-and-shaped that doesn't leak (much), but I'm a bit stuck from here.
How long should the scrape be? How thick at the tip? How steep should the blend be? How much should I take out of the back? Where? Do I leave a thick spine, or blend it in? What should the crow sound like?
I have David Weber's excellent book, but he doesn't give any measurements other than the overall length in the appendix. I don't want to just copy the reeds I have - they work, but I don't feel "at ease" with them, if you know what I mean.
er .. help, please?
J.
