I think my original post was misleading. I did not mention the cost of the treatment (left it as $x) but did leave in the comments about the cost of the drum in case it helped anybody identify the actual treatment proposed.
The cost of the blasting is negligable - $55 AUD. I wanted to be sure the consequences of the treatment would be negligable, or at least only beneficial.
The instrument is German, probably about 60 years old, the lacquer is not falling off, and there is no proposal to treat the bore, just the surface.
As it was probably made this way - I will most likely keep it this way.
