mark -- The guide for the length of the tie is that point determined by when the sides close while tying. Measuring the length of the reed will probably give you a good idea, but it is not definitive. If you are getting success with the sides closing at e.g. 3 ties before the top of the staple on a longer staple, then, if the staple opening is identical, that same number of ties should still be your guide on the shorter staple.
