Incidentally, I finished an ebonite top joint Howarth S45c several years back - the sulphur content made the silver plating turn blue-black very quickly.
Howarth also fit an ebonite sleeve to line the upper section of top joint on some instruments instead of offering a completely plastic top joint, and also on exotic wood instruments - it still has the aesthetics of a completely wooden instrument, but has the added security of protecting the most vulnerable section against cracking.
As for all ebonite oboes, B&H and others made them for military use.
