IF ... there's a quote general rule unquote, it's more likely that a reed too soft for you will close up too quickly, as it doesn't have enough resistance for you to blow against; and, most likely cannot produce or sustain a vibrant forte -- best you can get out of it might be a puny mf while the reed is relatively dry, which quickly dims to peepy soft once the reed gets wetter with playing
