Howard -- Your ability to self-criticize can serve you well. Embrace it!Perhaps the method of teaching you describe has aided you in developing this quality. Unfortunately, the life of a musician is full of criticism -- from conductors, from reviewers, from fellow musicians, and from oneself. Adjusting to that reality will make your future much more pleasant.
Meanwhile, enjoy those scales and other etudes. They will never be perfect if you are using a good critical ear, and that will give you the impetus to continually improve. It is less important which etude and methodes you use than it is that you approach them critically and musically.
As for the duplets in the Silken Ladder, try thinking of them as all legato with a light tongue after each 2 notes, and avoid having too much 'clip' at the end of each duplet (the clip sometimes can slow you down).
