Hi All,
This is actually my first post on B-board. As a professional player and the owner of a Howarth Cocobolo, I can give you a few tips on care. First off, I love this oboe. I have had to replace the original top joint (which warped after about 5 years of moderate use) with a new top that has the delrin liner. Not all of the new Cocobolo instruments have the liner, so please check the makers mark as Chris suggests.
In general, just treat it like a regular grenadilla oboe. Since Cocobolo is a naturally "oily" wood, you really don't have to oil the bore much at all. Once in a while, you should oil the bore with almond oil and a feather. But, please take great care when doing this. two or three drops of oil on the feather is more than enough! you dont want to flood the bore with oil as some folks do. There are two reasons for this:
1-the liner won't absorb any oil, so you will just end up with a "goopy" bore and swab.
2 - the liner is glued in place, but over time, small spaces will open up and oil could get between the liner and the bore. This could actually cause the joint to crack as the wood may expand/contract against the liner causing stresses.
So, a little oil now and then is fine, but just be very conservative with it.
