I wouldn't worry call it what you prefer..Cor Anglais is standard here in Europe..I am not sure if it is just North America that uses English Horn..
I am slightly intrigued regarding the "murky reasons" you mention...What on earth are they?.
Personally I prefer Cor Anglais and dont like it when people refer to either the Oboe or Cor as a "horn"..purely personal taste and not a criticisim of anyone elses decision..
