A big competetive school can chew you up and spit you out. A state school with a teacher who is good *for*you* is worth its weight in gold, because the competence and confidence you can acquire from the right teacher will get you into a great grad school.
You have to know yourself reasonably well when choosing a school; oftentimes the best source of info would be the teacher at the school you're wanting to get into; s/he knows from experience what kind of person succeeds at that school and chooses accordingly. It seems cold but it's way better than having a studio full of students who are coming apart at the seams from the stress and environment.
