Right, but from a parental perspective, it means that you'll need to be planning way ahead at every step of the proceedings, in order to show your folks that you're a Responsible Person. So, for example, if you're assuming that you're going to apply to X number of music schools during fall 2009, that means you'll have at least one audition in spring 2010, so you'll need to spend the summer 2009 working to earn money to pay for that.
And it also means that you'll need to spend basically all of 2009, starting now, perfecting your technique, laying that solid foundation. It's not the sort of thing where you can cram at the last minute in December 2009 after you get accepted somewhere and your audition is scheduled. So that means you need to start looking at serious lessons for Spring 2009, which means January, which means right after Christmas break, which is like...now. You should be lining up a top teacher for spring...now.
We cannot overemphasize how competitive it is out there, both for getting into a school and for a career as a professional oboist. So you need to fight for every scrap of advantage you can get, and one of them is to start early and don't assume that "everything will work out somehow".
Says ur Mom.
