Thanks for the links. All three of them certainly have their strengths, although I must admit I still like the de Lancie on Vinyl better.

I offer my opinions since you probably wanted to know why I hold the de Lancie recording in such esteem. You can probably pick out what I value from my critique of the three.

The de Vries is very interesting since it sounds like it's accompanied by period instruments. There's that shimmer to the strings that leads me to believe so. Can you check on this? But de Vries isn't playing a period instrument, (or if he is, he's certainly making it sound modern). The nice thing is that he's really able to blend with the strings, which helps both ends of the dynamic spectrum.

Gordon Hunt is always beautiful, but what I don't like about this recording is that some of the phrases aren't allowed to breath (if this makes any sense). There's something very organic about the phrasing of the piece, and the effect of a simple breath.

Of the three, I certainly like Leleux's version the best because he uses the full dynamic spectrum, but he brings out the different colors of the oboe by pushing and pulling back with his air. The one thing is he is a bit spastic about his usage, meaning it doesn't feel entirely organic either. (It's too bad that the strings sound a bit sloppy behind him.)
