I'm an adult amateur who's been playing for 3-1/2 years now. And I've discovered two things about playing those notes: one is that some reeds just will not do it. And second, that once you're sure you've got all the fingers in position, with no leaks, the trick is not in the fingering, it's in the embouchure. There's no magic or secret combination of holding holes open or closed that will do it, if the standard fingerings aren't working. If you've tried all the fingerings from the method books, those *are* the "tried and true" fingerings.
What the problem is, then, assuming you don't have a "leak and squeak" problem, is either your reed, or your embouchure. So what brand of reed are you using?
And I've found that in order to produce e3 and f3 in particular, I need to "choke up" on the reed, which is kind of hard to describe but it works for me.
