When "mashing" down on these keys, it is the LH Eb key that needs to go down all the way. You only need to touch the Ab key to raise it sufficiently to sound.
On instruments with the "split E" mechanism, the LH Eb will cause the inner part of the RH ring-finger mechanism to close, but stay vented. This keeps the "E" in tune even though the Eb hole is venting. If you press your RH Eb key while fingering an "E", you'll hear how sharp this note gets! [On many instruments it is quite sharp enough already, without needing any help from you.]
Here's the crunch; even if you DON'T have the split-E mechanism, you should practice this fingering ANYWAY - so you don't have to "unlearn" things later on.
