This is a very subjective question, as your likely opinion on a gouge will depend upon what you desire from a gouge.

For example, I have one gouging machine which is beautifully made and the mechanism is exquisite, but the blade curve that it came with doesn't give me enough "ring" in the sound, and by the time I scrape the reed so far that I have enough "ring", I've totally destabilized the reed.

On the other hand, my graf machine has been ground and reground, and works great now that it has a proper blade curve.

There really needs to be more literature on gouging and gouging blades.
