Speaking as a teacher who has put in a few pupils for ABRSM exams, from grade 1 up to grade 6 so far, I don't think it matters *too* much if you generally play the pieces well / musically.
Having said that, I've had the comments sheets from lower grade exams (ie. 1-3) come back with things like 'just be careful to watch your tuning' - which annoys me intently, because it's a fairly meaningless comment to an 11 year old taking grade 1.... We do work on tuning in lessons, but there's only so much you can do until the player develops naturally. I don't know if the examiners take marks off in that scenario - but if they do, it's only 1 or 2.
