Greetings All
Thanks again to everyone who helped me out with my questions a few months ago.
I have now purchased a second hand Howarth S10B thumbplate effort. I have a new job (two actually) and a teacher so I am settled in one place at least until the spring.
I'm enjoying playing and surprised by how nice it sounds - relative to all those duck impressions on Youtube made by people who'd been playing for a couple of years - I thought it would be dreadful for much longer than it has been.
My question today is about tuning in the UK exam music system. ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall, London College of whatever it is etc.....
Having discovered how difficult tuning on the oboe is compared to some other instruments I play, what sort of expectation would an examiner have of a beginner oboe player. While I have a few months of stability I will probably want to take an exam, however, if they are looking for much tuning control then I'd be lucky to pass grade one.
Does anyone who has taken exams here remember comments about tuning on their mark sheet? I dread being marked by a pianist examiner and getting awful comments about it. I know all examiners are supposed to be trained to examine all instruments appropriately - but is this really that realistic? And what sort of standard are they expecting to be achieved at each level. I can do the notes and the music interpretation part - tuning is a whole new kettle of fish.
