The main use for the spatula is for trilling A#-B - you hold the spatula down with LH1 and play the A# as normal (x,xo|xoo) and trill with LH2 for the B natural (x,oo|xoo) - the spatula keeps the C key closed while RH1 is held down.
In the upper register the A#-B trill is much easier - play the A# as normal (8ve2 xxo|xoo) and close RH finger 2 to give B (8ve2 xxo|xxo) - I found this out purely by accident and have even used it as a high B fingering as it has more substance than the usual 8ve xoo|ooo fingering.
But I do tend to keep LH1 on the spatula when playing in sharp keys to prevent any unwanted C naturals cropping up when going between the upper and lower registers. On German spec oboes they sometimes have a second spatula on the upper joint Bb key (for LH2) which can prevent any unwanted Bbs.
Some Cabart 74 (Loree) oboes from the '80s didn't have the spatula fitted at all, but they are fitted on most.
