Hi LoreeoboeNeh
sorry, I didn't realise that your problem was somewhat different to merely making sure that it didn't slip off the crook. I know exactly the sense of frustration you're experiencing. I have at least 10 crooks - it used to be more - and I found that some crooks were so wide at the top that I couldn't get my staples on sufficiently to play in tune. I bought a couple of gold plated crooks at some considerable expense, from a company called Flightlevel, from someone who used to be the cor player in Dallas, I think. There was no doubt that they were very good crooks, but all of my staples failed to go on very far, leaving me with very flat middle B's and first octave G/G#'s! I didn't have the patience to file the top of the crooks down, in a hit or miss improvement, and instead sold them told to various players, who seem very happy with them. Have you tried some of the new Marigaux crooks of late? They make the cork at the base of the crook so wide that it doesn't fit into most instruments, just their own newly widened cor crook slots. This may be a marketing ploy to encourage one to buy and stay on their own model of cors. When I pointed this out to one of the guys at Howarth, he couldn't see that there was anything wrong with making crooks that would only fit one make of instrument. It's just business. Personally, my Loree Cor has always sounded best on Howarth's crooks. I just find them better than the other French companies in this respect. My advice is to spend some time experimenting both with crooks and staples until you feel most comfortable, then try to stick with that. At the end of the day it's your input and problem solving skills that will count most as a successful oboist, rather than the latest fad. James
