 Re: Sound in Motion

I have both books (thanks to Cooper over at www.barbaratheoboe.wordpress.com for the tip!) and have already finished Sound in Motion and am reading the Tabuteau book. Tabuteau had an enormous outsized impact on the way phrasing is taught in U.S. conservatories, introducing quantitative methods to rationalize expression, make it logical and give it an intellectual foundation. The SiM book is a very good digestable summary of many of these ideas and other ideas that have been inspired by them. It's a bit like a musical version of a school of acting...what the audience sees/hears on the surface corresponds to the internal methodology of the performer. I guarantee you will pick up at least one or two useful concepts from that book!

The Tabuteau book is an exhaustive biography of this important man who pretty much established the U.S. school of oboe. To really understand the impact of Tabuteau, you have to realize two things: 1. He was one of George Gillet's top students, which makes George Gillet the true great great grandfather of both the American AND French schools of oboe! 2. Almost every oboist worth his salt in North America can trace his lineage back to Gillet, primarily through Tabuteau (the other connections being Fernand Gillet and a handful of other seminal French oboists who also came over from France roughly at the same time during the early 20th century when there weren't enough good American oboists to populate the rapidly growing symphonic scene). You can get a rough idea of this if you look at this somewhat dated and incomplete website and start by looking at who G. Gillet and Tabuteau taught and in turn who their students taught:
