My first oboe lesson, 55 years ago, was also my first reed-making lesson. It gave me an idea of what was involved with our instrument. I learned how to tie a reed over the course of the first few lessons (I was 10). And my teacher would make a reed out of what I had tied during subsequent lessons, showing me what he was doing, and finishing it up while I played. I gradually learned to do some scraping, and ultimately I was making the reeds and my teacher would just improve them at the lessons. The last part of each lesson was devoted to playing duets, from which I learned style, tone, ensemble listening, and a host of other things without much need for verbal explanations.
