I recently had the bad luck of being assigned to caucus with a group of flutes (12 flutes and me) during a breakout session at a workshop.

I was the proverbial red-headed stepchild of the group, and took a lot of ribbing (theoretically good-natured) about the nature of my instrument and those who play it.

In particular, they felt that oboists are "such whiners!" because we're always complaining about or fussing with our reeds, blowing water out of our octave vents, and swabbing compulsively.

There was no explaining to them how critical these minutiae are to oboe success.

So, even if we ourselves get comfortable with the dumb things we gotta do to play well, the rest of the instrumental world will still perceive us as neurotic.

It's enough to give you a complex, if you didn't have one before!
