What I find interesting is that most of your better oboists have given it up, thinking that's it!!!, only to come back to it months or years later. True? Talk to people. My teacher for one. I know several others like that, including some on this board. Hmmmm?
I personally treat it purely as hobby. I don't have high hopes of being so good as to make money with it, rather...just enjoy it. I use it to tax my mind, entertain myself, and (hopefully) others. I think of it as art and it makes it a worthwhile adventure...one not to be taken too seriously. You'll have your good art and your crap art. Can't always have a winner...the best of the best have their bad days.
I find that breaks are good (and healthy!)...put it up for a week, take it out, play it for several months or weeks, put it up again for a week or so. Keeps me from getting too bored and/or frustrated. Trust me, you won't lose your embouchure in a mere week. ;|
The ultimate frustration for me is to put a time limit on things - i.e., how fast can I learn this piece for the next performance? How come I haven't mastered reed making after doing it for a year now? As long as I know I have the rest of my life to do this, I'm at ease. If I was in college doing this with high hopes of a career, I'd probably have lost my marbles by now. Those of you in this stressful situation, I feel for you. I will pray for you to keep your wits about you and hang in there.
Oboe is not for everyone...it's the ultimate test of patience and persistence. Never let it get the best of you!
