Re: New - question re: buying reeds online

Hi --

I think I've just about done a personal survey of reeds available online -- I've tried a lot of them. I personally prefer a not-so-hard reed, so you and I probably would not like the same ones. However, I do find that some reeds just play better than others, hard or soft. Actually, if you get a good playing reed that is too hard, you can usually adjust it down. (I know you know that . . .)

OK -- I have had a good experience buying reeds from Stuart Dunkel, and from Forrest's in Berkeley, CA (I've only tried Duste and house brand from them -- prefer Duste). Forrest's will get things to you very quickly.

I have bought reeds from Mark Chudnow, which were good but pretty hard for my taste. A lot of people like Meg Cassell's "Good Tone Guild" reeds. She will custom make for you, and actually will let you send them back. They are interesting reeds. They smell really nice! But I couldn't get the ones I ordered to set up for me -- I probably ordered them too hard.

I've also had good reeds from "Singin' Dog", and from an Ebay seller who sells Evans reeds (which run pretty soft, but after a day or two and some judicious pinching, settle down and become very useable -- for me, at least).

I've tried other makers, as well, but these are the ones that stand out in my mind.

Good luck!

Susan
