ah! i noticed while inspecting my yamaha's upper joint during 'weird reed' post that the 2nd octave pad was domed in the very small centre section, but the 1st 8ve pad wasn't, it appeared 'collapsed' and had about 3 tiny cracks in it radiating inwards (from the indented circle on the pad made from contact with the metal tonehole) into the recessed centre

... i gather from your post this probably means that particular pad should be replaced?
