 Re: European scrapes?

Although the U scrape looks more straightforward, scraping different areas will do different things - such as taking more off the base of the scrape will flatten the pitch and make the low notes more responsive (though will weaken the top notes) and scraping the top 1-2mm of the tip thin and evenly will add more brightness. A very slight heart can be left down the middle on a U scrape, though it will be much flatter than the spine running down American (W scrape) reeds.

Though the U scrape does leave a lot more bark on the surface than the long W scrape.

A U scrape can be modified into a W scrape, though it's more of a hybrid of European and American styles (though it won't have such a pronounced spine) - and a very easy reed to get on with if you like this best-of-both-worlds scrapes.

Either way, the choice to wire or not wire is up to the player. I like mine wired as it's a quick way of controlling the aperture once the reed is well soaked. NEVER adjust a dry reed by pinching the wire - it'll only end in tears when it splits.
